In an effort to create platforms for members to explore trade and investment opportunities, KEPSA partnered with the Embassy of Hungary, together with other partners, in hosting the Kenya-Hungary Business Forum that was held on 16th June 2025 in Nairobi. The forum aimed at facilitating robust business-to-business (B2B) engagements between Hungarian and Kenyan enterprises, paving the way for strategic collaborations, joint ventures, technology transfer, potential export and distributorship arrangements with European partners.
The event brought together Kenyan business enterprises and 10 Hungarian companies in key sectors vital to both economies, including information and communication technology (ICT), agriculture, animal feed, water treatment and health. The trade turnover between Kenya and Hungary increased by 30% to nearly $14 million in 2024.
H.E. Azbej Tristan - State Secretary for the Aid of Persecuted Christians and the Implementation of the Hungary Helps Programme, highlighted the importance of mutual respect and trust in partnerships while reaffirming that Hungary's interest in Africa is focused on development and stability. He went on to outline notable projects, including wastewater treatment and irrigation technology in Kenya, and major investments in Angola and the DRC, totalling over $850 million. He also highlighted agricultural cooperation, including a Hungarian model farm in Kenya, as a successful initiative borne of the two countries’ strong bilateral ties.
In his opening remarks, H.E. Zsolt Mészáros – Ambassador of Hungary, reflected on the growth of bilateral relations between Hungary and Kenya since the 2016 business forum, highlighting increased trade, development assistance, cultural exchange and education. He noted that Hungary had provided 200 scholarships to Kenya and also thanked partners' efforts in organising the event.
KEPSA was represented by Dr Tim Theuri, CEO of the Kenya Healthcare Federation (KHF) – KEPSA Health Sector Board. He highlighted Kenya's status as a regional economic powerhouse, with a strong private sector, a well-educated workforce and significant investments in agriculture, digital technology and renewable energy. He noted that 75% of Kenya's energy comes from renewable sources and emphasised the country's digital security laws and infrastructure development.
Kenya's impressive development was highlighted by several key statistics, including an 80% literacy rate, 85% internet penetration and a substantial 5.9 billion USD invested in construction. The nation's budget, strategically prioritising agriculture, manufacturing and infrastructure, was noted as the largest in the East African region.
The forum featured tailored B2B matchmaking sessions providing an opportunity for Kenyan and Hungarian enterprises to forge trade and investment partnerships. Other leaders who spoke at the forum included Mr Filippo Amato - Head of Trade, Delegation of the European Union to Kenya; Mr Gábor Jenei - CEO, Hungarian Export Promotion Agency (HEPA); and Ms Stacey Ruto - Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) representative.
